Bernie Arai

Bernie Arai's career as a performer, recording artist and educator spans styles from jazz to electronic music to Japanese taiko. He works regularly with some of Canada's most accomplished musicians. Born, raised and based in Vancouver and educated at the University of British Columbia (Engineering Physics), Capilano College (Jazz Studies) and New York's Drummer's Collective, Bernie performs across the country with various ensembles, and has toured the United States, Japan and Europe.
Performance highlights include the Brad Turner Trio, Hard Rubber Orchestra, Metalwood, sekoya, Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra, Sharon Minemoto Quintet, Altered Laws, Crash, Ross Taggart Quartet, Uzume Taiko Ensemble and Diversions. Bernie leads his own ensembles, including the Bernie Arai Trio, To Be Ornette To Be, and Wabi/Sabi, and co-leads hard-bop sextet Ugetsu and plays in the improvised electronic ensemble Elevatorhead with saxophonist Jon Bentley. underscore is Bernie's solo project featuring new music written on/for/with Nintendo Gameboy, and TAG Trio is a new group making improvised ambient music with Chris Gestrin on analog synthesizers, Alcvin Takegawa Ramos on shakuhachi, and Bernie on Atari ST. He has had the opportunity to perform and record with many great musicians from around the world, including Dr. Lonnie Smith, Kenny Wheeler, Slide Hampton, Gary Bartz, Don Thompson, Bobby Shew, Phil Woods, Ingrid Jensen, Brian Lynch, Seamus Blake, Neil Swainson, Michael Blake, and Phil Nimmons.
