Bio

Dave Sikula

Dave Sikula has been playing the guitar professionally in the Vancouver area for fifteen years. He studied music and jazz guitar at Capilano College part time for several years allowing him to study with guitarist Bill Coon for two years as well as providing the opportunity to work under other strong musicians, composers, arrangers and band directors such as Ihor Kukurudseh, Rejean Marois, and Brad Turner. As a change of scenery Dave decided to move to Toronto in the year 2000 where he was accepted into Jazz Studies at the University of Toronto. The two years he spent there enabled him to study with guitarists Roy Patterson and Lorne Lofsky as well as saxophonist Kirk Macdonald, Phil Nimmons, trumpeter Kevin Turcotte, among others. Other highlights of this experience included opportunities to perform a small group under Kevin Turcotte in Long Beach, California and perform with pianist/arranger Jim McNeely. Upon completion of his degree in Jazz Performance Guitar at the University of Toronto in 2002, Dave returned to Vancouver where he has been working regularly as a guitar teacher and guitarist performing a wide reach of of musical styles and genres. Almost immediately following his return, Dave reconnected with past musical compatriot trumpeter Mike Zachernuk, re-joining his quartet that would record two CBC Jazzbeat Sessions over two years, and has appeared several times at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival from the years 2000 to 2003. In 2002, Dave also re-connected with trumpeter/improvisor J.P. Carter with whom he had worked alongside in 'the Millennium Project' years before and formed 'Carsick', a guitar/trumpet duo project focused intently on the juxtaposition of strong, yet often spare melodic content to sometimes dense sonic textures created through the use of electronics and effects. While initially based on written material, the duo now incorporates improvisation on a nearly equal basis as another mode of expression.

Dave has performed in Italy and the U.K. as well as jazz festivals across Canada including Halifax, Montreal, and several appearances with various groups at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Other notable projects include 'Inhabitants', a more groove based unit also involving trumpeter J.P. Carter, and a recording, tour and several performances with the legendary organist Dr. Lonnie Smith.
